The hero of this work is Pyotr Andreyich Grinyov who, at age 17, is sent to the army by his father. Upon arriving at his station he dines with the Commandant's family and falls in love with his daughter, Masha. More of a lengthy story than a novel. Doesn't take long to read, but it's lovely, with its Russian outlook, expressions, and actions. An old fashioned story. A very pleasant change. And certainly the price is right.

The product was exactly as described. It downloaded perfectly! I am thrilled with the seller and the purchase. It worked exactly like the product was described.
How can you go wrong on a classic and the other books that he wrote, forget the time they were written in and immerse yourslef in them
Very interesting story about Cossacks, Russians, and others fighting, a good guy and a bad guy who were both heroes in their way, and a love story thrown in.
This is a little-known work by the seminal Russian author. He is better known for Eugene Onegin, Boris Godunov and other works. Later Russian writers often refer to him in their writings, so this little book gives a glimpse into his emerging talent. It is a must for followers of Russian literature and delvers into the "Russian soul." It is convenient and inexpensive to purchase it for the or the app on a tablet.
I read the work through and through for a Russian Literature Class. I have worked a little on translating myself and considered the translation rather good in capturing the way Pushkin wrote, that is, in a very transparent, clear and to the point way. But, and this is a really big BUT, the version has omitted some fragments that are immensely important to the novel. I don't know if it was done by the translator or the transcriber, if by folly or by intention, but you will not find any of the epigraphs or the short but rather important fable of the eagle and the crow told by Putgacheff to Grinneff in the carriage they are travelling towards the end.
I wouldn't recomend this version. Look for another one or buy one that has been edited with more responsibility.
This is a fairly straightforward story of a young and naive young soldier serving in the hinterlands of Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great. There is a "coming of age" aspect. Despite somewhat limited description and sense of place, we are transported to another place and era, with different priorities and sensibilities. The story is easy to read and seems like a easy introduction to Russian literature.

Formatting Several awkward line breaks. The original has multiple endnotes explaining untranslated Russian terms and patronymics. These are not hyperlinked so you'd have to jump to the end and then back. I found the old style spelling of Russian names to be slightly annoying, but that's nitpicky.

Good value!
-somewhat predictable, the way identities were never realized first off, but then later revealed, and then this schematic would be run thru again. It is that kind of story, 19th century funhouse-type, but quite enjoyable. I felt most badly for Pugachev, I must say. But rebellion will get you in the end unless you win./ Which Pyotr & Masha finally did..
More of a lengthy story than a novel. Doesn't take long to read, but it's lovely, with its Russian outlook, expressions, and actions. An old fashioned story. A very pleasant change. And certainly the price is right.
